How to compare two PDF files

  1. 1. Open the original and revised PDFs

Put the earlier version in the original slot and the newer version in the revised slot. Select a sample in the workbench if you want to try the views first.

  2. 2. Compare text and page appearance

Select Compare Differences Now. Switch between Doc View, Redline and Pixel Overlay. Use the difference navigator to review highlighted text changes.

  3. 3. Review and save a text summary

Check important amounts, dates and clauses against the source documents. Use Export Text Changes to download added and removed wording with context and page references.

Choose text or visual PDF comparison

PDF text comparison finds changes in readable words. Visual PDF comparison finds changes in the rendered page. Use both when a document contains text alongside images, signatures or stamps.

PDF comparison modes and their limitations
ViewUse it to reviewKeep in mind
Doc ViewOriginal and revised documents side by side with text highlights.Word highlights depend on the PDF text layer and extraction order.
RedlineAdded and deleted words in a continuous text view.It does not explain the legal or financial significance of edits.
Pixel OverlayChanged images, moved stamps and page layout differences.Rendering and alignment differences can also change pixels.

For example, changing a payment term from 30 to 60 days is a text change. Moving a signature block without changing its words is a visual change. Neither view replaces a final review of the original files.

Local document processing and practical limits

Your PDFs are processed in your browser

PdfCompare processes PDF document data on your device. Document bytes are not uploaded to a remote processing server. Text differences are calculated from extracted text; page images are compared locally.

The website loads its own assets and uses Google Analytics for usage measurement. Local PDF processing does not certify legal or regulatory compliance.

Scans and large files need extra care

PdfCompare does not perform OCR. An image-only scan can be reviewed visually, but word highlighting requires a readable text layer. Text extraction order and page alignment can affect the results.

Processing speed and capacity depend on document complexity, image resolution and available browser memory. A large PDF may be slow or fail to load; start with a smaller page range when necessary.

Questions about comparing PDF files

How do I compare two PDF files online for free?

Open the original PDF in the first slot and the revised PDF in the second, then select Compare Differences Now. Use Doc View to review the documents side by side, Redline for added and deleted words, or Pixel Overlay for visual changes. PdfCompare is free to use and does not require an account.

Does PdfCompare upload or store my PDF files?

PdfCompare processes PDF document data locally in your browser. Document bytes are not uploaded to a remote processing server or stored in a cloud document account. The website still loads its own assets and uses Google Analytics for usage measurement. Local document processing is not a guarantee of regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between text and visual PDF comparison?

Text comparison highlights added and deleted words from the readable text layer of a PDF. Visual comparison renders PDF pages as images and compares their pixels, which can reveal changed images, moved stamps and layout shifts. Pixel differences can also result from font rendering or page alignment; they do not establish the meaning of a change.

Can I compare scanned PDF documents?

Scanned PDFs can be inspected with Pixel Overlay. Word highlighting requires an existing readable text layer, such as one added by OCR software. PdfCompare does not perform OCR, so an image-only scan cannot produce a meaningful word-level comparison.

Is there a page count or file size limit?

PdfCompare does not impose a server-side upload quota because document processing is local. Practical capacity depends on page count, image resolution, document complexity and available browser memory. Large or image-heavy PDFs may be slow or fail to load, especially on mobile devices.

Can I download a PDF comparison report?

Export Text Changes downloads added and removed text, nearby context, original and revised page references, and the selected filters. Download Revised Text saves the revised text separately. These exports do not include pixel differences, an annotated PDF or a certified audit record.
